Similar to one of my floating bowls, the pattern on this piece mirrors the view from a spot on the Appalachian Trail near spec mines in mid-Virginia, where I could see the clouds breaking up and I stayed put in a hard wind, watching the sky clear and the sun go down. I didn’t mind putting up my tent after dark.
Using the method I developed to create my Ridge vases, I made just a few of these large bowls by staining my white porcelain a range of hues, and layering it to create a stratified, ridgelike effect.
The exterior is brilliant unglazed porcelain, and the interior has a glossy clear glaze over the white clay.
